Joe Gomez
Left Back and Center Back
Joe Gomez has made limited appearances for England, but we believe he will be included in this summer’s Euro squad due to the lack of quality left-back options. The absence of Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell due to injuries is why we believe Gomez will get the call. Gomez has impressed this season at Liverpool, displaying versatility by playing across the backline for Jurgen Klopp. While England is well-stocked at right-back and has plenty of center-back options, Gomez could be a candidate at left-back, given how well he has played this season. In 2015, Liverpool signed Gomez for a fee of 3.5 million pounds. Injuries have marked Joe’s career as he did not become a major player for Liverpool until the 2019 season, in which Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League. The last time Gomez appeared for England, he suffered a tendon injury to his left knee in 2020, marking his fourth injury in six seasons. After the departure of fellow England teammate Jordan Henderson this summer, Gomez became the longest-serving player for Liverpool. Gomez prefers to play as a center-back but can also play as a full-back on either side. Known for his athleticism, pace, and strength, he is able to produce powerful and dangerous runs up-field on the counter-attack and, in defense, is rarely physically dominated by an opponent. Due to the lack of options at left-back and the adversity that Gomez has gone through to reach this point, he will be a fascinating player to follow throughout the tournament.
