"The level of football in England is the top. English football is the leader in the world"
- Pele
The England National Football Team, nicknamed the Three Lions, is one of the oldest national football teams, and has been an influential presence since the beginning of the sport. For a brief history, the team competes in three international tournaments: the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League. This summer, the team is slated to be one of the top performers in the European Championships, if not the winners, despite having never won the title before. There are high expectations set for the Three Lions, and fans are intrigued to see whether head coach Gareth Southgate and captain Harry Kane will be able to lead the team to a victory that they crave so dearly, especially against other top contenders such as France and Germany. To date, it has been 58 years since the Three Lions won a trophy at the World Cup in 1966, will they win another at the Euros this year?
"The weight of history and expectation seems to burden England's players, inhibiting their ability to perform at their best when it matters most."
- Rio Ferdinand
Why hasn’t England won a trophy in over half a century? There are a number of factors that have contributed to England’s failure to advance within tournaments to secure a win. From troubles at the penalty spot to errors in referee calls, the team hasn’t seemed to catch a break. Even with promising lineups, the current team has yet to see a trophy in their lifetime. Factors that have contributed to their perpetual failures include fateful penalty shootouts, qualification failures, referee debacles, and inability to learn new strategies to enhance their quality of play.
"England enters the European Championship with a squad brimming with young talent and seasoned veterans. With their hunger and determination, they are poised to make a strong statement on the international stage."
- Gary Lineker
What are England’s chances to win? With a 23.1% chance of making it all the way through the tournament, the English team is one of the clear favorites to win. Much of this will be dependent on Gareth Southgate’s squad selections and his willingness to stray from his traditional tactics. Southgate has many options to choose from, consisting of range talent, from seasoned players like Harry Kane to fresh talent like Kobbie Mainoo.
Other quality players exist among the mix such as Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden, which former Manchester United center back Rio Ferdinand says will win the Euros for England if they are given the freedom to do so. Pep Guardiola also comments on the Three Lions chances at clinching a win, and states that “they are on the verge” and that “it’s going to happen”.
Top Competitors
France
Manager: Didier Deschamps
Often considered the best European football team in the world currently, France is one of England’s fiercest competitors. Despite their loss in a friendly against Germany, they possess talent such as Oliver Giroud, Marcus Thuram, and Kylian Mbappe to herald in a potential win. It is all up to Deschamps developing the right balance in his squad to knock out the other competition.
Germany
Manager: Julian Nagelsmann
Under the new leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, Germany has been able to defeat heavy hitters such as France and the Netherlands. It will take using their top of the line players, such as Antonio Rudifer, Joshua Kimmich, and Ilkay Gundogan to secure wins in the upcoming tournament.
Portugal
Manager: Roberto Martinez
Portugal is coming in with a perfect qualifying record, winning 10/10 games, setting a strong momentum for the team as the tournament nears. With strong attackers in Ronaldo and Fernandes, the squad will be a tough contender to other top European teams. Although, after a loss in a friendly match against Slovenia, will the team maintain its competitiveness?
Spain
Manager: Luis de la Fuente
The Spanish team has taken on some young talent that could make them a huge competitor this year. Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal offer fresh energy that will blend well with the expertise of Rodri, heightening the impact the team may have in the tournament.
Belgium
Manager: Domenico Tedesco
Coming off of a horrendous performance in the 2022 World Cup, Belgium has the chance at redemption in the Euros this year. With Kevin De Bruyne as their star, and Lukaku being a top scorer in their qualifying matches, they appear to be more competitive than years past.
